The 20 Cent IoT is Coming
2019 will be the year of significant cost reductions for IoT connectivity: As announced in October 2017, Sigfox will now reduce node costs for one-time connections to 20 eurocents. This is not the brokerage price for messaging but the price for the physical logic including the message to the Sigfox Cloud. The new logic turns an RFID tag into a Sigfox tag that automatically sends a message to the Sigfox cloud when the tag is torn off. There are many areas of application for this technology: In retail, it ensures that an alarm is sent even if a RIFD tag is missing. Envelopes will acknowledge the successful receipt. Packaging indicates the consumption of goods and can trigger an automatic re-procurement. And device manufacturers can detect the opening of housings and thus exclude warranty cases. On containers or energy meters the opening of a seal can be detected. All these applications, including geo localization, are available via the Sigfox network. Based on the Sigfox messages from the packaging, maps of the goods’ locations can be generated to adapt marketing and services to the real usage location. This new technology sets a cost-per-node benchmark enabling Sigfox to become the de facto standard for the mass market for IoT connected devices. Sigfox is also expected to prevail wherever IoT applications need up to 140 messages of 12 bytes per day and four messages back. Above these limits there is still enough room for alternative technologies.
