Tanvas is pioneering the next generation of multi-touch haptic technology. Despite advances in graphics, sound and vibration, today’s touchscreen is still a lifeless window to the digital world. TanvasTouch surface haptics add a new dimension of interaction by bringing textures and feelings to flat, physical surfaces. As you slide your fingers across the screen, TanvasTouch modulates the friction between your fingers and the surface, producing a wide range of haptic effects including textures of different roughness, pitch, and magnitude, edges of varying sharpness, and virtual bumps of different shapes. TanvasTouch is a fully integrated solution characterized by a solid state actuator and single controller. Software-defined haptics enable an unlimited range of effects that can be harmonized across size, shape and surface. Different than vibrotactile feedback, there is no moving mass - the only thing that moves is the finger itself. Different than electrovibration, there is no low frequency carrier signal. Instead, TanvasTouch controls the magnitude of friction increase as a function of touch location. TanvasTouch can be built into any touch-enabled product across many applications including automotive, retail, consumer electronics, visually impaired and custom displays. The company was spun out of Northwestern University and is headquartered in Chicago.
