Other multi-bay SMBus chargers use sequential charging for at least half of their charge bays. This greatly extends the time needed to recharge a full load of batteries. The Inspired Energy multi-bay chargers immediately begin to charge any compliant battery placed into any charging slot, with the result that total charge cycle times can be minimized. This is ideal for users in industrial environments in which the battery packs are changed frequently. Instead of sitting in a sequential charge bay waiting for the charge to begin, every battery is immediately recharged and is therefore available for use earlier, maximizing the return on the investment in battery packs.
Similar products from other manufacturers have only very limited capability to recharge different standard battery packs – often a different charger is required to charge a different battery pack. All Inspired Energy desktop chargers work with all 80 Inspired Energy standard N-series battery packs irrespective of cell type (Lithium-Ion or Nickel metal hydride), battery voltage (3.6V up to 14.4V), or battery capacity (2.4Ah to 9.6Ah). This is particularly important if your application uses a variety of different smart batteries – such as the Biomedical Engineering department of a major hospital. Smart SMBus battery packs are a common component in medical devices and the capability to recalibrate the fuel gauges on a number of different medical batteries all at the same time can greatly reduce the time that the valuable medical equipment is out of commission.
As with all Inspired Energy chargers, the multi-bay chargers conform to the Smart Charger Specification (SCS). Upon insertion of the battery, the charger and battery communicate via the SMBus. The battery identifies itself and requests an appropriate charge. Charging then begins automatically with no further user input necessary, and the charge is tailored specifically to the battery pack because the battery itself controls the charger.
