The Internet of Things offers us a broad range of technology solutions to help make our world more sustainable. It particular in the energy sector with home and building energy management systems based on embedded and IoT technologies much success is being achieved. The increased generation of electricity from intermittent sources poses challenges for the electricity grid and IoT solutions can play a significant role here in support demand response applications and creating flexibility for the grid by linking them to home and building energy management systems, industrial control systems, etc. While IoT supports sustainability, there is also the question of sustainability for the IoT itself. The majority of IoT devices are battery powered, which requires costly battery charging/changing for prolonged operation. The billions of IoT devices manufactured every year often have bespoke applications and are not sufficiently reused contributing electronic waste. The panel will address both sustainability angles of the IoT. We will discuss some of the latest developments and ideas as to how IoT can support enhanced sustainability in the electricity sector but also how using renewable energy sources can power embedded IoT devices to make them more independent of battery changes and prolong the lifetime of IoT devices.

Supply Chain Challenges

Supply chains in the electronics industry are still strained, for multiple reasons. While the impact of the pandemic is waning, geopolitical tensions have become the dominant factor. To reduce the dependence on imports of advanced ICs, the US, Japan and Europe are striving to encourage domestic IC manufacturers, as well as trying to attract leading overseas semiconductor companies to invest in building new fabs locally.However, it is obvious that even if the regions succeed in reducing the dependence on front end manufacturing, crucial parts of the supply chain will still be located in the Asia-Pacific region, particularly in China. Thus, many western companies need to cope with the US export restrictions to China. Firstly, they must figure out how much of their China business they could secure despite the restrictions; secondly, they need to find ways to maintain access to components manufactured in mature and trailing edge technologies in China, which China could offer for attractive prices – and which will be difficult to source outside China. What does this mean in relation to building up reliable and resilient supply chains, for semiconductor manufacturers and distributors as well as their customers, such as EMS and embedded systems manufacturers?
All these questions on supply chain issues – in a fast-changing political and economic environment – will be explored at the panel discussion “Supply Chain and Chip Shortage” at embedded world 2023.

Trends, Challenges and Best Practices for Embedded Vision

In recent years, there has been a growing trend in the use of embedded vision in a variety of industries such as automotive, healthcare, manufacturing and retail. Embedded vision refers to the use of computer vision algorithms and technology on devices such as smartphones, drones or tiny system-on-chip (SoC) devices. Unlike a physical datacenter, such embedded devices have lower compute, limited storage and restricted power consumption. To address these challenges, some best practices have been developed, such as, for example, optimization of algorithms for specific hardware platforms. Additionally, the development of machine learning and deep learning are helping to improve the accuracy and performance of embedded vision systems. In this panel, we will discuss the latest developments and innovations in the field of embedded vision, and will explore how companies working in the field of machine vision address the challenges associated with embedded devices.

Sustainability with responsible AI

Skilled Labour Shortage

The shortage of skilled labour impacts today many industry sectors worldwide. In Germany, for instance, a recent study from the VDE, one the largest ICT associations, reports a demand for electronic engineers that is about twice as large as the total amount of graduates in the country. This large demand is driven by mega trends such as digitalization, the energy crisis, Indusry 4.0, autonomous driving and the like. Talents are more selective, often unaffordable for small and medium-sized enterprises, expect flexible work and aim to be engaged in societally relevant challenges. This panel discusses these challenges and potential strategies to tackle them with a selection of experts that cover perspectives from academia, start-ups, a family business and a large international corporation. The panel touches upon topics ranging from individual strategies to attract talent, the role of education, diversity and what multi-stockholder policies may be needed moving forward.
