Wireless Power Transfer in Rotating Assemblies
In many industrial, automotive and consumer applications there are rotating assemblies in which there specialized electronic circuits revolving on top of a static base that has a power source or battery connected to it. Traditionally mechanical devices such as slip rings are used to transfer power and data in rotating assemblies. In harsh environments, rotating segments struggle with maintenance and durability. The mechanical devices will get worn out after some time and are less reliable. In such applications, wireless power transfer using high-quality coils is turning out to be a good alternative. In addition to power transfer, low bandwidth system data can also be transferred across a rotating joint. However, it is not trivial to design wireless power transfer circuits in rotating assemblies. System designer needs to consider many variables such as coil shape, coil losses, effects of metallic shafts and metallic casings, the distance between coils etc. In our talk, we are going to cover our learnings from designing wireless power for rotating assemblies.
