Unified Test Environment for LPWA and Cellular IoT
One of the main requirement of IoT solutions is having networks with wider coverage to connect a large number of low power devices. LPWA networks and Cellular IoT networks are promising candidates in this space. Since the underlying use cases come with various requirements, it is essential to perform a comparative analysis of competing technologies. Tests and performance measurements are key activities to evaluate the real-life performance of these wireless networks. For automated testing of radio communication and for measurement of the network performance and stability of wireless networks a unified and automated test environment is developed by the authors. This is realized using the approach of identical test case description and automated execution tools, for different abstraction levels such as physical testbed and simulation, using identical measurement or analysis tools. A physical testbed is used for testing embedded wireless systems under various RF environments, investigating network performance, routing and stability. Furthermore, the tests were extended to free field environment for real-life performance measurements. For all these tests, an Eclipse Titan TTCN-3 test framework based test description and automated execution are conceptualized, implemented and used. This paper describes the overall architecture of the unified test environment and discusses the results of our performance investigations of various LPWA and Cellular IoT technologies.
