Understanding DPA Threads and Counter-Measures to Safeguard IoT Devices
Differential Power Analysis (DPA) is a side-channel attack based on a statistical method of analyzing a device€™s power consumption to identify data-dependent correlations. These correlations can be used to leak keying material without requiring an exploit of the underlying algorithms or protocols. This session will explain the concepts of side-channel attacks, simple power analysis (SPA) and differential power analysis and will also present results based on power measurements from an experimental side-channel attack. The primary takeaway is that DPA technology is available today even to hobbyists, thus presenting a security threat to many IoT devices. After a brief explanation of the math behind DPA and SPA, the session will focus on suitable countermeasures in hardware, software and system design. Hardware countermeasures are mostly left up to IC manufacturers to implement, and there are many other techniques developers and system architects can use to prevent side-channel attacks.
