TSN - a Pragmatic Approach
IEEE 802.1 Ethernet has become the de-facto standard for M2M communication. It is a widely available and cost-effective way to connect huge numbers of communicating devices. TSN adds industrial requirements such as low-latency time-aware communication, advanced time synchronization and seamless redundancy to the Ethernet standard. Supported by both the automotive and industrial world, TSN is destined for the next big step in industrial Ethernet communication and the wired media of choice for Industry 4.0. Various silicon vendors have started adding TSN IP cores to their SoCs or are offering configurable IP for programmable SoCs. While these solutions (supported by mostly proprietary software) allow to evaluate the basic communication standards of TSN (such as time-aware scheduling or time synchronization), no standardized approaches exist for configuration, stream reservation or to realize simple interoperability tests. In this paper the auther summarizes his learnings from a journey through the various TSN substandards and their practical evaluation using recent SoCs. Starting from real-world industrial automation scenarios, he describes the necessary stepts to develop, configure and deploy test scenarios to evaluate TSN features, performance and reliability in GNU/Linux. He describes tools and methods for debugging and performance analysis and how to generate stress-tests and corner-case scenarios. The paper is wrapped up with a summary of practical test results.
