The Timing is Right to Move to Ethernet for Automotive Audio
In automotive audio applications, Ethernet is used to reduce the wiring effort for connecting a centre unit with an audio endpoint. Transmitting audio via Ethernet requires real-time capabilities which can be achieved by using the AVB protocol including features such as gPTP, SRP and traffic shaping. Audio endpoints based on TDM/I2S to Ethernet bridges that include multi-channel audio amplifiers and microphones are highly demanding in terms of overall latency and timing requirements when supporting applications like echo or noise cancellation. To fulfil the overall timing and latency requirements, and to ensure low system cost, efficient hardware solutions are required for the data flow from Ethernet to TDM/I2S and vice versa. To achieve maximum flexibility a general-purpose CPU core should be added also. The presentation will explain the applied approaches to implement a powerful and cost-efficient audio endpoint ensuring audio transmission according to standards like IEEE 1722-2016.
