Surviving Automotive Power Transients
Electronics, and specially, microcontrollers have taken over the automobile. The power source in a vehicle can vary far from the nominal 12 V battery. With cold crank starts the voltage can drop to as low as 3V. Disconnect the battery while the alternator is running and the resulting €˜load dump€™ takes the voltage to near 90 V. Jump starts can be up to 24 V. Sometimes the battery is connected backwards by accident. Add to this +150/-220 V spikes from the ignition system not to mention +/- 25 kV ESD spikes. Can your power converter design deliver clean power to the microprocessor and its circuits? This session reviews the hazards which are clearly defined in standards and the various possible solutions for clean regulated power and transient protection in vehicles.
