HDR for TVs and monitors: More remarkable than high resolutions?
HDR for displays is at least as important as resolution: Users see the better contrast and colors of HDR images immediately, the higher TV resolution only when they step closer to the screen. This is all the more true for 8K. There are now five standards for evaluation of the static and dynamic metadata: HDR 10, HDR 10+, Dolby Vision, SL-HDR1 aka Technicolor and HLG. The requirements to the TVs vary depending on the HDR type and the TV manufacturers pursue different strategies for the support of HDR. The procedures used for TVs cannot be applied directly to monitors. Therefore since 2018 monitors have their own HDR standard, on which all major manufacturers have agreed. It distinguishes between three expansion stages depending on the dynamic range and luminance of the display. HDR on the monitor is just getting started, where each stage has its own area of applications. I will present the current HDR standards for TVs and monitors and explain their requirements. Furthermore I will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the different standards and their potential areas of application.
