Custom RF SoC Have Never Been this Easy
The trend in Mobile Satellite Services (MSS) is for greater demand for Asset Tracking, Monitoring & Control & Automotive Telemetry & Broadband for Infotainment. There is an expectation for broadband availability in remote locations. Some of the elements that have hindered wider adoption are terminal size, noise, power efficiency and RF blocker performance. We will look at the changes happening & discuss the challenges they present. We will look how CMOS technology can answer the demands of MSS with its low cost, low power consumption and high levels of integration and how S3semi developed such a transceiver to remotely track, monitor and control valuable assets & how use of RF CMOS technology on 55nm node solved this with a highly integrated RF, Analog and Digital SoC. S3semi have built significant expertize in the use of Digitally Assisted Analogue techniques which will be shown as a key enabler of mixed signal integration, where digital logic monitors the analog circuit performance and adjusts the parameters using calibration loops. The solution was a fully integrated, single-conversion radio transceiver with a digital baseband processor SoC.Finally, the transceiver represented a big improvement from the dual conversion architectures, common in the MSS space. This development enabled production of the smallest & lightest satellite modems in the world, which enabled the end customer to greatly reduce the form factor, power consumption and cost of their terminals.
