CANopen FD - Embedded Network as Base for IoT Applications Vortragssprache Englisch

More and more applications can be controlled and monitored via web-based applications, e.g. from a tablet or smart phone. These web-based applications such as e.g. clima control in a private house hold, etc. rely on data that is often generated in an embedded and deeply embedded network of the application to be monitored or even controlled. To allow in future as many reasonable web-based applications as possible, system designers of embedded networks will provide huge amount of data, in addition to the really required control data. As a consequence of this trend, we can forecast a higher demand for data throughput and a high degree on communication flexibility on the embedded network level. To meet these requirements in the best way, CAN in Automation (CiA) has updated the well-accepted CANopen application layer and communication profile. It has been enabled to combine the advantages provided by the new CAN FD data link layer and the classical CANopen. CANopen FD enriches CANopen by the Universal Service Data Object (USDO) that represents a highly flexible and powerful communication object. The USDO is intended to become the mulit-function knife of embedded CANopen FD networking. Transferring any amount of data in a confirmed uni-, multi-, or broadcast communication between two CANopen devices by absence of any manager/master application or communicating over network borders by using the inherent USDO routing capabilities summarizes just a subset of the possibilities, contributed by the USDO to CANopen FD. In contrast to the classical CANopen SDO, the CAN-IDs used by the new USDO do not determine any longer the accessed device. As the destination is coded in the data field of the exchanged CAN FD data frames, a USDO client is enabled to establish dynamically USDO cross-communication to any other network participant during runtime. Due to the inherent routing capability of the USDO, this applies also to CANopen FD devices that are remotely connected via router applications. Many embedded system setups can be modified dynamically due to user interaction. With special regard to these systems, the ability provided by the USDO to establish dynamically cross-communication, can be very advantageous in future. IoT gateways may also benefit from the attributes, provided by the USDO. The USDO enables them to fetch any information from all connected embedded devices, during runtime. In CANopen FD, big data applications will also benefit from the lengthened process data objects (PDOs). On the one hand just more data can be provided in a smaller time slot. On the other hand, especially the lengthened CAN FD data frames allow the consideration of sophisticated security measures, in a simple way. The presentation gives an insight in the new CANopen FD application layer and communication profile CiA 1301. In addition it informs how new CANopen FD functions assist system designers and maintainers to make an embedded system a part in the world of the IoT.
