A Programmable Analog Computer on a Chip
Analog computers after they served successfully in the space program became extinct and replaced by digital computing. Advances in analog CMOS technology and years of research at Columbia University made it possible today to reincarnate this technology adapted to our digital world. Analog computing exhibits several traits that still digital computers cannot match. Very low power consumption, high processing speed in continuous time and reliable crash-less operation albeit at the accuracy of approximate computing. We will present a fully digitally programmable analog computer chip implemented in a 4x4 mm2 chip and capable of solving models of non-linear differential equations. This first of its kind chip can interface directly to the analog reality in the embedded world and avail its predictions either directly to analog controls or digitally with orders of magnitude higher speed and energy savings than its digital counterparts.
