Wind River: The Future of Avionics is Autonomous
There are clear trends toward increasing use of Automatic systems leading towards a more autonomous future. But how do these trends challenge us in Avionics, particularly around safety certification, but also around system architecture and the increasing challenge of Cybersecurity? We are seeing this in multiple markets, with automotive leading the way with experimental and production autonomous systems already deployed in cars. This technology is based around advances in Artificial Intelligence and is becoming increasingly pervasive. However, in terms of Technology Readiness Level for deployment in safety systems, it is still at the start of the journey. AI systems are typically fast-moving systems developed using modern DevOps processes, with little adherence to best practices approved by the aviation safety agencies for software development and deployment. Added to this challenge is that the dynamic nature of “self-learning” systems goes against principles of safety developed over many years in the aviation industry. This briefing introduces these trends, looks at the challenges and shows how Wind River Helix Virtualization Platform would solve these runtime challenges, along with tools such as Wind River Simics, which could be used in an Agile development process for automated testing or even test for credit.
