When is a Custom SoC the Right Choice for IoT Products?
The Internet of Things (IoT) will result in an explosion of the number of connected devices. Many of these devices will be built using standard off-the-shelf silicon, others will significantly benefit from using an SoC customized for the specific application. But is it feasible for product manufacturers to create their own chips? When would it make sense, what are the benefits, and how would they go about doing this? This presentation will answer these questions so that product manufacturers can assess whether building a custom SoC is the right choice for their IoT applications. This presentation will, by way of example, explore the product and economic benefits and the economic challenges of a custom SoC that was created in an industrial control application, providing real world data on cost, size and power consumption along with the impact of feature enhancements.
