Connected Vehicle technology is an essential enabler for safer roads and future autonomous vehicle deployments. Direct vehicle to vehicle (V2V) and vehicle to infrastructure (V2I) digital wireless communication (collectively referred to as V2X) enables vehicles to communicate with each other and with road side equipment. It has been predicted that V2X technology can reduce or eliminate up to 80% of non-alcohol related collisions. In addition, V2X technology can help accelerate the deployment of practical automated and driver assist solutions. Security is critical to V2X technology as communications between vehicles and communications between vehicles and infrastructure requires the exchange of sensitive information that can affect safety-critical functions. Authenticity and integrity of the data is required to ensure trust between the communicating entities. In addition, confidentiality needs to be maintained to ensure privacy. Security ensures that an adversary cannot manipulate safety-critical components in a vehicle. V2X is built on an underlying infrastructure of secure, reliable, two-way authenticated messages among vehicles and roadside equipment. This workshop presents an overview of V2X communication security and privacy principles and details of the current state of the art for V2X security including information on various aspects of the security design, international differences, and current best practices. The attendees will be able to take away practical knowledge about V2X security as well as learn about security techniques that can be applied outside the vehicle and automotive domain.
