Virtual Digital Sensor for Analog Signal Processing on SoCs
Modern embedded systems require a large number of analog inputs from multiple sensors and transducers which sense real world physical parameters in industrial control systems. This requires analog to digital converters with varying resolution and multiple input channels sampling the input data and converting to digital form for a control system. When using a microcontroller (MCU) to implement this control system, the embedded software for the MCU has to handle an additional task of generating control signals for this ADC and the channel selector. This uses up precious controller time and limits the operating bandwidth of the control system for closing the loop. Our analog data acquisition controller module does off-load the data acquisition task to a hardwired IP in an FPGA based embedded system. Targeted for use in FPGAs/ SoCs which require an external ADC to convert multiple analog signals into digital values for real-time processing. This allows flexibility in selecting reference voltage and number of input channels. We can interface various types of ADCs with standard interfaces like SPI, I2C, Parallel, LVDS etc. Configurable sampling rates and features an AXI standard microprocessor interface bus to enable fast data transactions with the MCU instantiated on the FPGA. A dual port RAM interface with MCU is another feature of this IP allows the controller to directly fetch the data from the dual port RAM without worrying about interface sequences.
