Troubleshooting in Embedded Networks Based on CANopen FD
CAN in Automation released in September 2017, the CANopen FD specification CiA 1301. CANopen FD is an improved CANopen. It supports most of the well-known CANopen features and complements CANopen by a more flexible communication objects that enable a higher data throughput as well as security solutions. With regard to diagnostics, CANopen FD has introduced a comprehensive diagnostic memory. The diagnostic memory allows reporting all application-related error and warning events that occur during system runtime. Via CANopen FD object dictionary entries this diagnostic memory can be controlled; e.g. a defined control mechanism enables to select the way the errors shall be recorded, e.g. according to a FIFO or ring buffer-principle. Furthermore system designers can select the type of events that shall be reported; e.g. is it relevant to record errors of a specific priority, the error vanish events, etc. Compared to classical CANopen, the error events themselves are stored together with much more information. In addition to the type of error, CANopen FD provides information on error event time and severity. Additionally, CANopen FD devices provide detailed information on the part of the CANopen FD device that is affected.Thanks to the real bus-line architecture supported in CAN-based systems, one error recording device is sufficient (e.g. a data logger) and system maintainers are enabled to evaluate easily the error scenario and to assess appropriate counter measures.
