Towards a Greener World with ECMA-393 Network Proxying: A Practical Guide To Support Multi-Protocols Network Presence
ECMA-393 ProxZZy for Sleeping Host is an important technology for networked device to stay in low power mode as long as possible with its network presence and service availability are maintained. ProxZzy technology is already applied in networked printer and this concept of using a low power processor or controller to act as network proxy agent can also be applied in IOT application especially in the fog computing. Fog computing paradigm is shifting IOT processing workload from cloud to be closer to input source. Often the machines that are used in fog computers have high computing power, i.e., high power usage if they are always ON. Therefore, it makes sense to apply ProxZZy technology on fog computers to further reduce power when there is no input streams for fog processing. The network presence of fog computer will be maintained for (1) fog machine and data center and (2) fog machine and edge devices. The list of network protocols that are important are mDNS, SNMP, DHCP, IGMP & etc. This paper will share design approach and learning that we have gained in implementing network proxy agent which consist of flexible and efficient rule-based packet analyzer and packet responder engine. Network proxy agent could filter out rogue TCP reply attack and only wake up the host when there is legitimate TCP SYNC initiated by whitelisted IP. As mDNS is a common PNP protocol used in IOT world, the paper uses mDNS as an example to show how network proxy agent actually works.
