The Challenges and Opportunities of In-Vehicle Connectivity
HDBaseT is a standard for connectivity in the professional audiovisual world, transmitting audio and video, Ethernet, USB, controls and power (the 5Play feature set), over a single category (LAN) cable, for up to 100m. It is highly suitable for several sectors, such as enterprise and corporate, educational, digital signage, industrial PCs, and more. As vehicles became an extension of our ever-connected lives, it became clear that HDBaseT could address many challenges in in-vehicle connectivity. As such, HDBaseT Automotive – a variation of the AV HDBaseT to address the specific needs of the automotive market – was introduced. HDBaseT Automotive enables high-throughput, simultaneous tunneling of video and data, with native networking capabilities over 15m (50ft) of a single unshielded twisted-pair (UTP) cable, targeting ADAS and infotainment applications. It the one technology today that can deliver high bandwidth with near-zero latency, while complying with strict EMC requirements. It also enables multistreaming and daisy-chaining, simplifying in-vehicle networking while reducing number and weight of cabling. As in-vehicle connectivity evolves, we must support the increased number of different ECUs and applications in the car (such as smart antennas, display connectivity, cameras, networking, Ethernet, digital audio, controls and more), and the need to carry different types of data on different links. To avoid a proliferation of cables and connectors, there is a clear need to utilize the same infrastructure to carry different types of data – leading to the convergence of the vehicle connectivity. HDBaseT Automotive optimizes connectivity convergence, while simplifying deployment of new features and use cases. With reduced number of cables – even with higher bandwidth – we can enjoy a lower total cost of ownership and better end user experience.
