SSD SoC Microcontroller with Embedded Neural Network for 3D NAND Flash Memories
The advent of 3D NAND flash memories has radically changed the way SSD's reliability has to be managed. Adding the third dimension to the manufacturing process, in fact, increased the number of variables controlling how data are written, erased and read to/from a memory. In this context, machine learning algorithms can be of help. In this work, an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) accelerator has been implemented as a programmable co-processor for the SSD SoC controller. The main idea is to have a specific engine able to: 1) constantly measure the wearout of the drive; 2) help the SSD SoC controller to take the right decision in terms of error recovery flow; 3) keep the QoS (Quality of Service) as low as possible. Experimental results show that, thanks to this approach, it is possible to reduce the 3D NAND raw BER by 2x at the end of life of a 3D NAND based SSD. Additionally, an architectural overview of the ANN accelerator and SSD SoC Controller will be presented.
