SPICE Simulation of 100Base-TX LAN-Transformer in an Ethernet Transmission Path
Today Ethernet is worldwide standard medium for data transmission. Although established for decades, hardly any circuit simulations are made due to the lack of appropriate SPICE models. Würth Elektronik is the first company to offer time- and frequency dependent models for all catalogue articles, ranging from 10BASE-T to 10GBASE-T. We show how the SPICE models work, what is the benefit of using them and how they can be implemented and tested in a transmission path. In a hands-on demonstration, the accuracy and use of the models in a 100BASE-TX system is shown in practice. We will deal with the frequency- and time dependent behaviour of LAN transmitters. In the frequency domain, we look at the mixed-mode signals, which give us the transmission quality, reflection and attenuation. For the time domain behaviour, the models are inserted in an Ethernet transmission path in which MLT-3 signals are used to test the model for signal integrity and common mode noise. The presentation will highlight the diverse applications of the models, so that listeners can use the knowledge later in their circuit design.
