Safe and Secure Field Updates of Embedded Linux Systems
Although developing an embedded system requires a lot of effort, the major challenge of maintenance starts only after delivery. Feature requests, software bugs and severe CVEs destroy the perfect world sooner than expected and require updates in the field. The two main challenges here are the ability to create a fixed and working (tested) software version in a short period of time and having a reliable mechanism for deploying them safely and securely on a number of unsupervised devices. Keeping these aspects in mind from the early design of the system as well as during its development and maintenance lifecycle will prevent incalculable troubles, efforts and costs. In this talk, Enrico will give a short introduction into using the powerful Open Source tools and workflows to keep your products up-to-date with frequent but small and efficient maintenance iterations. With the RAUC update framework as an example, he will also discuss the challenges and possible solutions for performing safe and secure updates of unattended devices in the field.
