Protect the Ports!
In order to get millions of transistors into the small die space of modern MCUs the features are very small and only tolerant of very low voltages. Operating between 1.1 and 5 V today's MCUs must be protected from the harsh reality of the world they operate in where the user can quite easily zap the product with 8 kV from a static discharge. Of course he expects the device to be unaffected and continue to operate faultlessly. Directly connecting a switch to a digital port may work for the hobbyist and simplifies things for learning but has no place in a professionally designed product, consumer or industrial. This session covers the basics of ESD protection, filtering and the combination for all types of interfaces - digital, analog, serial buses (I2C, SPI, RS-232, USB 2.0 & 3.0, LVDS), HDMI, ethernet and RF. The characteristics that define the problem and the solution are presented with example schematics thus providing the user with a useful reference guide.
