Open Source OPC UA Pub/Sub Over TSN: Current Status and Implementation Plans
OPC UA is a protocol for industrial communication. Besides, the protocol itself, OPC UA defines a semantic, object-oriented information model and services to interact with the information model over the network. Vendor-interoperability is achieved by use of the OPC UA protocol and standardization of information models for the different application domains. OPC UA not only applies to low-level communication between sensors and control computers but also between entire networks and global communication hubs such as cloud servers. The open62541 project was initiated to provide an OPC UA SDK under an Open Source license that can be linked to proprietary software. The goal is to increase the adoption of OPC UA and achieve widespread vendor-interoperability for communication and information modeling. The new OPC UA PubSub extension for many-to-many communication has been implemented for open62541 in a project in the organizational framework of the OSADL. A focus of the project was to enable realtime communication by the use of OPC UA PubSub over Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN). Funding for the project was provided by a consortium of industrial users. This presentation explains in more detail how the OPC UA protocol and Pub/Sub work and how the software is configured and used. Finally, the features under development are presented and an outlook is given about future implementation plans.
