IoT Platforms: Selection and Pitfalls
For companies that want to realize IoT projects, the market offers a variety of IoT platforms. These provide basic functions and thus reduce the development effort. But choosing the right platform is difficult, because the platforms offered - now more than 500 in number - are hardly comparable and developed for different approaches. At the same time, the IoT platform is of strategic importance because it forms the basis of the entire IoT project - its performance and flexibility determine its success. Choosing an unsuitable platform can result in high follow-up costs, caused by extensive extensions or, in the worst case, a change of platform in the middle of a project. Jan Rodig, CEO of the IoT service provider tresmo, talks about his experiences from more than 40 IoT projects. He shows which criteria should be taken into account when choosing a platform. The experts at tresmo have developed a checklist for this purpose, which queries more than 80 platform properties in various areas: from communication protocols to APIs and cost structures. Jan Rodig also explains which aspects of an IoT project need to be clarified and how typical pitfalls can be avoided. How can a vendor-lockin be avoided, for example? Or how does the geographical distribution of IoT devices affect the choice of platform and the IoT project as a whole? These and other practical questions will be answered by Jan Rodig in his lecture.
