Image Compression with a System-on-a-Chip
Image compression is becoming an important topic in many industrial, automotive or medical applications. Recent technical development made 4K imaging sensors affordable for many adopters, while some years ago even HD was kind of cutting edge technology. Together with High Dynamic Range (HDR) and High Frame Rate (HFR) requirements the amount of generated pixel data can be enormous, leading to bottlenecks in transport and storage of image content. Image compression helps to reduce the data amount, without losing too much of image quality. Many image and video codecs are implemented in software on PCs; on the other hand hardware accelerators allow dedicated image compression tasks. But where special demands on resolution, on dynamic range, or on low energy consumption are beyond standard approaches, image compression with a System-on-a-Chip (SoC) will combine several advantages: Fast but still adaptable algorithms in the FPGA-part, configurable interfaces, flexible interfaces, as well as embedded CPU-ressources for further data handling.
