Embedded Vision - Efficient Development of Applications Using Professional Vision Software
Compact devices running embedded vision software are continuously gaining significance, especially with regard to the challenges of Industry 4.0 or Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) scenarios. Small embedded devices, such as smart cameras, vision sensors, or tablets, represent a key component of highly automated production settings and can literally be seen as the “eye of production”, making them irreplaceable. In order to reach their full potential in such settings, though, these devices need to run specialized software. The development of vision applications often concentrates on single functions. With regard to cost/benefit considerations, long-term compatibility and interconnectivity, as well as a fast time-to-market, however, the focus should rather be on the application-development-cycle as a whole. This presentation will discuss the efficient development of embedded vision applications on, e.g., Arm®-based platforms. The audience will gain interesting insights into the differences of open source vision software, such as OpenCV, and paid software, such as MVTec HALCON and MERLIC. Though embedded systems are gaining traction, many machine vision applications will still run their image processing on standard industrial PCs. Therefore, the presentation will also show how the relation of the different systems that are used has changed and continues to do so. The talk will also elaborate on MVTec’s involvement in partner networks and communities that have evolved around the topic of embedded vision. These groups are very important for the constantly growing embedded market – not only to communicate and spread the increasing number of possible use cases more effectively, but also to establish common standards to further facilitate the use of embedded devices.
