Connectivity, Complexity & the Role of Enhanced Debugging
The adoption of connectivity and a multitude of other additional features into many traditional embedded products has greatly increased the level of complexity in these devices. In parallel, product development timelines are shrinking and quality requirements are tightening, especially in regulated markets such as the automotive and health industries; but true within the broader embedded device market as well. These factors converge to push the need for embedded software engineers to achieve more outcomes with less time. To succeed in this challenging environment engineers need to be armed with new tools and efficient processes. Of course it is important to design to avoid bugs, but it is not realistic to assume that this is 100% achievable in complex systems so a part of the solution is more efficient debugging. However, the fact that debugging remains a time-consuming activity, that is still driving up embedded software development costs and blowing out project timelines is proof that further advances in the area of debugging are vital to the embedded industry going forward. This presentation will discuss the adoption of a methodical and scientific approach to debugging, as well as a look into available tools, with a particular focus on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi technologies.
