Basics of Copyright Law and Open Source Licensing: Fulfilling License Obligations is Easier Than You May Think
Whenever software is conveyed under an Open Source license a number of obligations and prohibitions are imposed on the distributor. As a very common situation of such software, the receivers of the software will recursively redistribute it in such a way that a chain of distributors and receivers is created – all of them having to fulfill the same license obligations. However, for the time being, there is no generally defined and commonly understood set of procedures and actions to fulfill these obligations. In consequence, there is no way all members of the distribution chain can adhere to the same rules. Therefore, a project was created to convert the most frequently used Open Source licenses into checklists with a canonical language, have them approved by international lawyers and legal specialists, and make them generally available. This presentation will provide details of the OSADL Open Source license obligations checklists project, demonstrate the approval process and present examples of checklists of selected Open Source licenses.
