Automated Node ID Assignment in CAN and CAN(FD) Networks
One of the remaining challenges during the system integration of CAN and CAN FD systems is the assignment of a unique node ID to each device connected to the network. Without such an assignment, a CAN (FD) system can typically not start operation, as devices cannot be properly addressed. Today, node IDs are typically set either by manual configuration (switches/dials or using a device specific configuration utility to store configuration in non-volatile memory) or by auto-assignment through LSS (Layer Setting Services). Depending on bitrate and timeouts, the later typically takes 4 to 10 seconds per node to execute. This paper summarizes and compares existing solutions to this challenge and introduces and improved LSS method, that can automatically assign node IDs to unconfigured nodes about four times faster than the existing methods. Example implementations are shown and analyzed for both CAN and CAN FD.
