Session 03: Future Automotive Displays & Optimizations

Advanced Direct-lit Light Panel Technology for Automotive Displays Vortragssprache Englisch

Today, most of mobile and television displays in the consumer market are using LCD technology. LED backlighting technologies are utilized for those displays as a standard light source. They provide a good luminous efficacy, good color saturation and are cost effective. Initially Automotive Instrument Clusters were realized as hybrid mechanical parts. But in 2008, the Japanese car manufacturer Toyota has launched a first full Instruments Cluster Display (ICD) based on LCD technology. This technology evolution made it possible to show a lot more information in the ICD, which also could be changed and adapted easily. Recently, most OEM companies foresee to implement LCDs not only as ICD and center infotainment display, but also as entertainment displays for passengers. Therefore the amount of required displays is steadily increasing. Standard LCDs using edge-lit LED modules are the industrial standard today. For the further evolution of design, car designers would like to have more degrees of freedom like curved and free form designs to fit the dashboard shape. Furthermore a better contrast is the key function for realizing a good impression in the car. Like in the mobile device market OLEDS could be a solution for this requirement. Nevertheless long term reliability in a wide temperature range and high brightness at the same time is important for the automotive market. Especially free standing displays on the dashboard if being exposed to sunlight provide severe thermal and brightness conditions. This is quite difficult to be realized with OLED technology. Nichia developed a new light panel solution to meet those stringent requirements from OEMs. Its named Nichia Light Cluster Type J. The direct-lit technology has a high number of LEDs located behind the LCD glass which can be individually addressed. This new solution uses 240 segments in a 12.3 inch display to illuminate the LCD locally. This local dimming technology obtains superior darker black pixels depending on the image displayed. There exist similar solutions in the market, but in general these technologies cannot achieve the required form factor in terms of thickness. We have applied a special structure and therefore improved its thickness significantly. Realizing a panel including front and back metal case with a thickness of only 6 mm is possible. This is almost equal to the thickness of an edge-lit LED module. Not only thickness, contrast, long term reliability, but also high brightness and low power consumption can be realized. This combination of various aspects provides an outstanding optical performance compared to edge-lit and OLED solutions. This presented technology delivers many benefits for automotive applications. Good contrast due to local dimming creates a better impression during night without any glare from the display. Furthermore the low power consumption can reduce CO2 emission and also result in a higher mileage for electric cars. Long term reliability in a wider temperature range can be realized by good direct heat dissipation towards the metal housing. Nichia believes that this technology will be an enabler for the automotive market to create a new customer experience.
