The C/C++ compiler and debugger toolchain IAR Embedded Workbench give developers a complete integrated development environment (IDE) with everything you need in one single view - ensuring quality, reliability and efficiency in embedded applications. It is the world’s most widely used toolchain for 8-, 16-, and 32-bit MCUs and offers the industry's broadest support for microcontrollers, in total more than 13,000 devices in 40 architectures from all major vendors.

During 2019, IAR Systems added support for RISC-V, making IAR Embedded Workbench the only available commercial tools for RISC-V.

The toolchain is available in several versions covering different customers’ needs. For Arm, and for Renesas RX, RL78 and RH850, and for STM8, the toolchain is available in Functional Safety editions with safety-certification from TÜV SÜD according to the requirements of IEC 61508, the international umbrella standard for functional safety, as well as ISO 26262 (ISO 26262-6:2018), which is used for automotive safety-related systems. In addition, the tools are certified according to the European railway standards EN 50128 and EN 50657. For Arm, RX, RL78 and STM8, the certification also covers IEC 62304 for medical device software.
