The aim of the 1992 established nonprofit organization is to promote CAN’s image and to provide a path for future developments of the CAN technology. An important part of the organization’s effort is spent to develop and maintain the CANopen and the CANopen FD specifications as well as the support of all other internationally standardized CAN-based higher-layer protocols (e.g. SAE J1939, ISO 11783 series).
The association owns the CiA GmbH company offering services such as seminars, in-house seminars and conferences as well as publications (e.g. CAN Newsletter) and periodical emails (CiA’s Weekly Telegraph and the monthly CAN Info News). Additional services include conformance testing of CANopen devices and general consultancy support (but no product developments).
More than 600 companies joined CiA. Each member may participate in any technical and marketing group.. The CiA General Assembly elects the Board of Directors yearly and decides on the annual budgets.
