LoRa technology offers a complementary network option to Bluetooth Low Energy. LoRa offers a long-range networking capability of up to 14Km. However, this comes with the limitation of low bandwidth for data transmission and reception. By combining LoRa and BLE in one RF module, Insight SIP offers customers unparalleled flexibility and versatility in radio communications capability.
LoRa is ideal for applications such as metering, telemetry and monitoring systems where the data requirements are very low, and the frequency of data update is modest. However, more sophisticated operations on a device – such as installation, commissioning, diagnostics and software update – might be very difficult or impossible to achieve via LoRa. Thus, the BLE channel gives users the ability to perform these operations on a device, directly from a Smartphone, Tablet or PC application. A further use-case for this type of device could be as a gateway, where several sensors provide data via BLE, and then the data is concentrated or treated before sending via LoRa.
Insight SIP offers various LoRa-BLE modules, tailored for different markets (unlike BLE, which uses the globally standard 2.4 GHz band, LoRa uses sub-GHz ISM bands that vary by territory).
In each case, the modules include a Nordic nRF52832 BLE device, which provides the BLE connectivity and a powerful M4F Cortex processor to act as the application processor. The LoRa radio is provided by the latest generation 126x Semtech transceivers, chosen to match the market requirements of each territory. These bring best in class performance and power consumption capability. The modules are fully certified for the territory that they are targeted at.
All modules include both BLE and LoRa antennas and represent the only system in package devices on the market (that we know of!) featuring two integrated antennas.
