Contactless power transmission through inductive proximity coupling is becoming more and more popular. To get acquainted with the technology inherent in contactless power transmission, RRC power solutions developed an Qi conform evaluations kit which can be used as a plug-and-play demonstrator, as well as a developer tool for installation in existing environments. The evaluation kit is composed of a power transmitter with a transmitter coil, a universal power supply with 19VDC output voltage, a receiver module with a receiver coil and various headers and receptacles (for use in a developer environment). The receiver module provides a regulated output voltage of 5V and a maximum of 5W output power. The entire system can be seen as an open concept with a very high engineering service, that ranges from the technology, to Design-In support and even complete solutions.

RRC provides 5 watt modules for contactless power and data transmission through inductive proximity coupling as standard. The modules are plug & play ready, and are compatible with the Qi standard of the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC). The module design – consisting of independent transmitter (Tx) and receiver (Rx) boards – can be incorporated into a multitude of different devices utilizing wireless power, with no need for external electrical contacts. On both modules the inductive coils are applied directly to the boards in addition to the electronic components. An optimized electronic design results in extremely small dimensions. However, a separation of the coil from the rest of the circuit board is possible. The modules have several safety features including foreign object detection. Continuous data transfer via I²C interface from the receiver to the transmitter allows the sharing of status information. The transmitter module supplies 19 VDC at max. 0.4 A. The receiver module provides up to 5 W output power and an unregulated 6-7 VDC output voltage, which can also be adjusted to a customer's application.

A new highlight in the series of Wireless Power developments in RRC is a proprietary 20-watt transmitter / receiver system solution. There are four advantages compared with the known Qi-solutions: Optimization of dynamic load changes, bi-directional data transfer, compact design and a more favorable price-performance ratio.

A major drawback of the Qi standard is the interference-prone data transfer in rapid load changes, due to the impedance modulation specified therein. This can result in the worst case to abort the power transfer. The solution is to separate the power from the data channel, so that dynamic load variations are compensated. Both the transmitter and receiver unit has two separate coils that are integrated into a coupled transfer unit, and thus the power transfer is split from the data transfer. Due to this integrated coil design, the coil size is the same and the electronics is only slightly larger at the Qi variants. The separation of the coils described above, as well as a new modulation method, there is now also the possibility of bi-directional data transfer. Another plus is the much faster data transfer compared to the Qi standard. This new technology features offer advanced capabilities at an attractive price-performance ratio.

In addition, RRC offers wireless power solutions up to 500 watts output power.
