The proven industrial computers from Janz Tec based on Raspberry Pi are now also available with the new Raspberry Pi 3 B+ module with long-term availability. The emPC-A/RPI3+ embedded PC and the emVIEW-7/RPI3+ 7” panel PC offer further advantages for use in industrial applications.

The most popular single-board computer by far has received an update. Although were not originally specified for industrial use, Raspberry Pi-based computers are often used in the sector today. The Raspberry Pi Foundation has now gone one better with the launch of the Raspberry Pi 3 B+ module, granting the wishes of professional users for a faster CPU, dual-band wireless LAN and long-term availability. The new module is now also available in Janz Tec’s two tried-and-tested systems, the emPC-A/RPI3+ embedded PC and the emVIEW-7/RPI3+ 7” panel PC.

The really outstanding innovation for professional users, however, is the guarantee that the 3 B+ modules will be manufactured up to 2023. As such, the two embedded systems from Janz Tec can be planned on a longer-term basis, particularly when it comes to series production. Another advantage when using the systems in Industrial IoT projects is their new Gigabit Ethernet support. Although their real throughput is limited to 300 MBit/s due to the internal USB 2.0 connection, the two embedded computers boast a network connection three times as fast as their Raspberry Pi 3B module-based predecessors. With the IEEE 802.11ac wireless networking standard, the two systems not only support the 2.4-GHz band, but also the 5-GHz band. The Wi-Fi module has already received global pre-certification and can be quickly integrated into internal projects and products. Moreover, the implemented Bluetooth 4.2 module improves the speed for Bluetooth LE. This allows data packets containing up to ten times more data to be sent two-and-a-half times faster than with preceding modules. The IPSP protocol (Internet Protocol Support Profile) is also supported, which enables packets to be exchanged using IPv6 packets. Smaller, low-performance devices such as sensors and actuators can now communicate directly with IoT cloud services via the internet. The fitted CPU is an optimised variant with clock rates of 4 x 1.4 GHz instead of 4 x 1.2 GHz (RPI 3B).

“For all our devices we focus on their use in future-oriented IoT projects. We are therefore delighted to be able to equip the cost-efficient Raspberry Pi systems even more effectively for use in industrial applications. When supplemented by further solutions from our IoT ecosystem, ranging from integration to reliable operation, they meet every requirement for professional use,” explains Dr Markus von Detten, Systems Engineering Manager at Janz Tec AG.

The other equipment of the emPC-A/RPI3+ and emVIEW-7/RPI3+ systems is unchanged. As such, a mains adaptor has been added to the CPU module, which enables connection to a 24 V power supply. The robust housings of the industrial PCs harbour a range of additional interfaces: four USB 2.0 ports, a network port and an HDMI port for connecting a monitor, a serial interface (either RS485 or RS232), four digital inputs and outputs, a battery-controlled real-time clock and an optically decoupled CAN interface. The emVIEW-7/RPI3+ seven-inch panel PC contains the electronics of the emPC-A/RPI3+ embedded PC, which has been combined with a 7” display in a robust metal housing to form a single device. This offers the graphics performance needed for smaller visualisations and control panels. The PCAP glass touchscreen has a resolution of 800 x 480 px. From a mechanical point of view, the systems are equipped for mounting on a DIN rail and VESA boreholes. A minimal Raspbian Linux system, which supports all existing interfaces, is installed as standard on both systems. A CODESYS runtime environment can be installed on request.
