The Internet of Things offers new opportunities also in the field of lighting to make everyday life more pleasant and implement new application ideas. In this way, individual lamps can be optimally adjusted to the respective needs and environmental conditions. Consistent communication via the Internet Protocol IPv6 down to the end nodes enables uniform and standardized communication and simplifies the implementation of new applications. This makes direct access via smartphones or the Internet possible without extensive protocol conversion. The IoT-Bus is an IPv6-capable fieldbus. Its IP capability and deterministic bus protocol, which provides guaranteed response times (real-time capability), make it ideal for a variety of innovative building automation and lighting control applications.

With the IoT-Bus, new business models such as "Light as a Service" are much easier to implement. It can take over the direct control of the bulbs in a building wing and thus implement individual lighting designs. Also, an optimal presentation of selling goods is possible. Furthermore, the individual lighting preferences in the office and in the private household can be entered automatically. Depending on mood and time of day, the lighting conditions can be adjusted individually. Another application for flexible control is the intelligent and production yield-oriented lighting in greenhouses. These are just a few examples of modern control concepts and state-monitoring where the IoT-Bus can add value.

In the case of new LED lamps, where the power supply is provided by means of direct current in the extra-low voltage range, a combined communication and energy supply of the lamps and the IoT-Bus node can be realized in the future. Using the IEEE 802.15.4 wireless protocol on the wired IoT-Bus is building the bridge between the wired and wireless worlds. Thus, in the future, additional sensors such as presence detectors, temperature sensors or brightness sensors as well as the normal light switch can communicate via radio and be flexibly connected to the IoT-Bus without additional cable routing. The activatable encryption of communication by means of standardized methods provides security against cyber-attacks.

The IoT-Bus is a fieldbus with IPv6 support and integrated security concept. It combines the benefits of native internet protocol support with the benefits of fieldbuses in terms of range, reliability, robustness, low latency, and simple installation. With the IoT-Bus, networks can be realized over a distance of up to 500 meters at a data rate of 1 Mbit/s. This technology is based on an adaptation of the IEEE 802.15.4 communication standard, which is the standard for wireless personal area networks (WPAN) and sensor networks, enabling the use of these protocols over wired communication. The concept provides for communication via 2- or 4-wire lines. The use of an untwisted 4-wire cable allows in addition to communication allows the power supply of the communication nodes or of LED lamps via the bus.

Using a special access method, the IoT-Bus enables real-time communication. The physical layer uses the standard according to EIA-485 (RS-485), but also offers adaptability to other interfaces. By using the IPv6 protocol and the transport protocols based on it, the application programmer has the standardized interfaces such as MQTT-S, MQTT, CoAP and others available. With the IoT-Bus lighting systems will be fit for the new digital age.
