Not every plug fits globally in every socket – this also applies for the future energy world. Each manufacturer has its own devices with their communication interfaces and protocols. Today, the user needs for each usage scenarios different devices, apps and software tools, which are usually not compatible with each other. This forces the user to use only apps and devices form always the same manufacturer. Together with other Fraunhofer Institutes Fraunhofer IIS has developed a flexible and secure open source framework for energy management systems as an »adapter« to enable interoperability between different devices of different manufacturers. OGEMA 2.0 (Open Gateway Energy MAnagement 2.0) allows the realization of different energy management systems for commercial, private and public buildings as well as industrial processes with only one system.
The framework uses a Java platform and standardized data models for the control of various energy producers, storages and consumers. The integrated app concept allows flexible installation of the application software for different utilization scenarios. Thus, the control of various devices via one or more web-apps within a smartphone can be implemented. Due to the hardware independency of the software, an easy adaption to different platforms such as PCs, servers or embedded systems is possible. Security enjoys a high priority in OGEMA 2.0, the allocation of individual access rights and usage rights are easy to implement.
The OGEMA 2.0 gateway can be used for optimal energy flow control and building management. Typical application fields are public buildings like schools or hospitals, business buildings and private households. This framework can also be used for the realization of various functions in the Smart Industry. The energy consumption of individual plants and machines can be easily captured, displayed and optimized. OGEMA 2.0 may also serve as an interface for the industrial plant or as control unit (SPS). Independent OGEMA 2.0 apps are simple to implement by means of a development kit for programming. So an app can be used as an interface to the cloud or to other local and global components. With OGEMA 2.0 individual solutions are affordable.
Customizable Security Concept
The framework comprises a customizable security concept. The security can be adjusted to the respective requirements in three different levels. The lowest level is suitable for installations in the private domain and allows a high flexibility in the communication over interfaces such as the internet or mobile connections The highest level supports a security level which is comparable to the BSI protection profile for smart metering and the connection of OGEMA 2.0 based energy management system with a certified smart meter gateway.
Individual and Appropriate Solutions
OGEMA 2.0 enables the implementation of individual and adequate solutions primarily for the local energy management. It is also possible to integrate photovoltaic systems, combined heat and power system, household appliance or lighting. The modular design of the platform allows many extensions and additions. In addition to that, OGEMA 2.0 unites different communication interfaces, for example to the smart grid and to smart meters. Finally, OGEMA 2.0 opens the way for specific participation of energy customers in smart energy management.
