Why LTE Cat M1 and LTE Cat NB1 Make Perfect Sense for Digitization and Smart Predictive Infrastructure
The new implemented LPWA technologies Narrowband-IoT (NB-IoT or cat NB1) and LTE cat M1 combines now the advantage of using common available infrastructure with low cost, low power consumption, deep in house penetration and high number of simultaneously operating units. NB-IoT provides its advantages in efficient battery operation and in house penetration which potentialize a coverage into to each underground room and factory building. NB-IoT is by design dedicated to consider cost optimized deployment essentialness due to the “clean slate” approach. NB-IoT does not need the intelligence to coexist with classic 4G traffic, hence there is a fair chance to reach customers cost expectations. Due to the fact that LTE Cat M1 technology is much closer to the standard LTE network, this technology allows applications which are need more bandwidth and a LTE like latency. Nevertheless, LTE Cat M1 provides also extensive power saving modes and an improved coverage. In combination with the security concept for the whole communication module, security by design is provided to consider upcoming security requirements from all participation in industrial IoT. A further aspect of IoT is the remote management of a large and growing category of connected devices; those with limited bandwidth and those viable only at very low production costs. For this type of devices a standard has been invented by (Open Mobile Alliance) OMA, called Lightweight M2M (LwM2M). u blox has been involved in early stage trials and proof of concepts for NB-IoT, LwM2M and LTE Cat M1 covering a range of use cases. This presentation will give deep dive insights into these communication infrastructure technologies. Part of the presentation will be the detailed representation of this technologies by using dedicated use cases from energy market and predictive maintenance. The operator involvement will also be outlined with an outlook into the challenge to handle in the future millions of devices inside of their network. Finally this presentation will outline future 3GPP standards for IoT.
