Using Cgroups in Container Technology for a Fine Grain Control of System Resources
Container technology, also known as a container, is a mechanism to package up an application with all of the parts it needs, such as libraries and other dependencies, and ship it all out as one package. This method makes containers a self-contained unit that can run anywhere and also isolates them with other such running container instances. Control groups (cgroups) is a Linux kernel feature which allows processes to be organized into hierarchical groups whose usage of various types of resources can then be limited and monitored. runC, a tool for launching and running containers according to Open Container Initiative (OCI) specifications. In this talk, Saurabh will present how cgroups is used in the container environment and how the system resources are controlled for a group of processes in the container. Using runC on the Linux system, he also demonstrates the usage of cgroups for controlling key system resources such a memory, cpu and network for a group of processes in the container.
