Time Synchronization for TSN
Time Sensitive Networking (TSN) is an extension of the IEEE 802.1 standard, enabling deterministic real-time communication in standard Ethernet networks. Time synchronization is a basic building block of TSN and a key requirement for every device in a TSN network. To provide a high-precision time synchronization of network devices, the IEEE TSN working group is revising the 802.1AS standard which is based on the existing Precision Time Protocol (PTP, IEEE1588). This became necessary to fulfill new requirements and restrictions of TSN. Although the revised standard is not finalized yet, the key changes are known. This paper discusses the main working principle of PTP including its hardware requirements. Its major contribution is a review of ongoing research activities of the TSN community with respect to high-precision time synchronization.
