The Usage and Benefits of Global Palettes in Embedded Graphics Applications
Global Palettes use a color look up table (LUT) for translating 8 bits of data per pixel into 16-32 bit colors. This has the effect of reducing the size of frame buffers, where graphics data is stored and processed, up to 50%. The size requirements for frame buffers are a significant factor in the cost and complexity of embedded graphics designs, therefore, using a Global Palette can lower overall costs of designs by enabling the use of smaller, less expensive microcontrollers as well as reducing or eliminating the need for external memories. In this presentation, we will compare the memory usage for typical Graphical User Interface (GUI) arrangements using Global Palettes to those that do not, showing the direct impact on cost and complexity between implementations. We will also look in depth at exactly how a Global Palette implementation works. Finally, we will discuss the benefits and drawbacks of using Global Palettes, resulting in an analysis of the types of applications that would benefit, and those that would not.
