Signal Improvement Concept for CAN FD Networks
Some CAN FD physical layer components could introduce the bit asymmetry, which is the worst lengthening or the worst shortening of a dominant bit in a given setup. To guarantee a functional and robust CAN FD network, the bit asymmetry should be as small as possible. The signal reflection and the ringing in the network add much asymmetry. For proper functionality it is necessary that occurring cable-reflected waves do not suppress the dominant differential voltage levels below 900 mV and do not increase the recessive differential voltage level above 500 mV at each individual CAN node. For the purpose to reduce ringing on the CAN_H and CAN_L wires, especially for the transition from dominant to recessive state, a signal improvement concept is discussed in the CAN in Automation (CiA) working group “IG CAN FD”. The signal improvement concept would allow achieving higher bit-rate (desired is 8 Mbit/s) or to allow larger topology flexibility for CAN networks. According to ISO 11898-2:2016, the signal improvement concept is a part of the high-speed physical media dependent (HS-PMD) sub-layer. The audiences will learn the functionality of the signal improvement concept. The presentation will also introduce the test method to simulate the ringing and plateau effect of the topology, through which the signal improvement performance of the concept is determined.
