Shifting Advanced Image Processing from Embedded Boards to Future Camera Modules - a Paradigm-Change for Embedded Designers? Today’s embedded designers can choose from a broad multitude of possibilities when it comes to Embedded Vision. Most of them choose CMOS camera modules, which are integrated in smartphones, tablets and laptops. These modules are the preferred choice for designers since these modules deliver an acceptable image quality, are small, cheap, and easy to integrate in embedded systems due to the standard interface MIPI CSI-2. Besides these modules, other cameras are available with LVDS and parallel interfaces, which make integration more challenging to designers. All these camera options for Embedded Vision have something very important in common: a poor capability of image processing inside the camera. The Embedded community put up with this limitation by operating important image processing tasks on the CPU or dedicated ISPs on the embedded board. Overall, cameras played a subordinate role in the context of the whole embedded system. In the last few years, there has been tremendous development of embedded boards with the capability to operate complex tasks for the embedded world. This includes more powerful CPUs, GPUs and dedicated processing units (e.g. proprietary ISPs), which offer embedded designers increased flexibility in designing their embedded systems. At the same time, today’s camera modules are not enjoying such attention. At least from the designers of embedded systems. The development of embedded camera modules is mainly driven by the smartphone and consumer market. New auto focus capabilities or 3D face mapping algorithms help catch the best moments and selfies with friends and families. But, does this development increase the flexibility of embedded designers in the industrial environment? This can be doubted. Furthermore, a sensor bridge with a total of four input interfaces enables the flexible integrations of famous sensors designed for industrial inspection, security or the consumer market. This opens the door for a broader variety of sensors for embedded designers. Such flexibility includes, among other things, the following parameters of the sensor: - Resolution - Shutter Type - Pixel Size - Frame Rate Finally, embedded designers can make use of the standard MIPI CSI-2 interface with up to 4 lanes and a maximum bandwidth 6Gbps.
