Scalable Safe HMI System Architectures
The fast pace of innovation in automotive has made the task of automotive ECU design and system integration much more complex. Increased safety and security requirements in new vehicle architectures are common, with safety requirements in particular adding significant challenges to system hardware and software design. Communicating safety relevant data to the driver via a safe human machine interface (HMI) will only become more complex as the amount of safety content increases. System designers and integrators are faced with the task of deciding how best to solve this challenge from a hardware and software perspective. This paper examines in detail how the hardware and software architectures of today€™s automotive safe HMI systems, such as instrument cluster and heads up display, must evolve to support the more complex safety data produced by ADAS and autonomous systems. We will also examine how these challenges were addressed by other industries with similar safe HMI requirements.
