Radio Scheduling in Dynamic Multiprotocol Applications
During this session, embedded developers will gain a solid understanding of new IoT use cases enabled by dynamic multiprotocol-capable radios. We will explain how achieving the best possible performance requires very specific analysis of the use case, and possibly dynamic modification of radio scheduler priorities. Finally, we will discuss potential use cases in which a classic dual-radio chip solution might deliver optimal wireless performance. This session will highlight different types of multiprotocol implementations including programmable, switched, dynamic, concurrent and multi-radio-based multiprotocol designs. In addition to providing an overview of these use cases, we will focus primarily on dynamic multiprotocol connectivity. We will illustrate these concepts using examples mainly from existing Bluetooth LE and Zigbee use cases, showing how detailed decision making enables the radio scheduler to provide airtime to the individual protocols. Since each use case is somewhat different, fine tuning the priorities requires experience and ideally simulation and/or experimentation to find the setting that provides optimal radio performance as well as the required quality of service. Finally, the developer must accept that a classical dual-radio solution may be the best way forward for some use cases.
