Qi Versus NFC: Evaluating NFC as a New Wireless Charging Solution for Small Battery Powered Devices
With the rise of small battery powered IoT devices come new technical challenges. One of it being the charging of especially small form factor devices, such as fitness trackers, hearables, and sensor hubs. While wireless charging evolves into a standard for smartphones, Qi as the established wireless charging technology, has proven to be challenging to design into smaller form factors such as wearables. Latest innovation in NFC technology allows its use for contactless power transfer, making it a new player in the wireless charging market. Operating at 13.56 MHz frequency, the NFC RF field can directly charge a small battery. The energy is transmitted by a high-performance NFC reader which can even be a highly integrated single IC solution including an integrated microprocessor. The NFC tag communicates to the MCU to inform about the status of the charging. Further efficiency improvements and miniaturization can be achieved with an optimized power receiver. NFC charging is being specified by NFC Forum. Looking at such small form factor devices, the design house NuCurrent, has conducted a study to compare Qi- to NFC-based charging designs. The spatial analysis compares commercially available charging solutions at 0.5W. The results evolve around parameters such as coil volume, efficiency, operating range, transaction speed and overall BoM cost. Based on these findings, the presentations aims to define a position for NFC within the wireless charging market.
