Process Control Cybersecurity Gets Serious: IEC 61508 and IEC 62443-4-1 in Tandem
IEC 62443 is a global standard designed to help reduce the risks associated with the exposure of Industrial Control System (ICS) networks to cyberthreats. IEC 62443-4-1:2018 describes a cybersecurity focused process for the development of individual components for use on an ICS network. It details principles to be applied to each development phase - from security requirements definition, through verification and validation, and on to support processes for the product in the field. This paper will address the concerns of ICS product developers who currently work to established development processes structured to conform with the functional safety standard IEC 61508. It will argue that IEC 62443-4-1:2018 provides an opportunity for development teams to apply a proactive approach to cybersecurity that complements the needs of functional safety standards. And it will assess how the need to comply with the two standards in parallel might impact the administrative burden of the project.
